Spenser Confidential
By James Davidson
I have decided to review some movies that were available on streaming services for the next few weeks in light of all that is going on right now. Most of the big movies due to premiere in the next few weeks have been postponed and large gatherings of people are being discouraged due to the COVID-19 outbreak. So I thought that it would be a nice time for people to sit back on their couch, in the comfort of their own home, and explore some of the many options available on Netflix and similar services.
“Spenser Confidential” is a Netflix original movie that premiered on the streaming service earlier this year. Mark Wahlberg plays Spenser, an ex-police officer who has just been released from prison for assaulting his boss, Captain Boylan. Spenser found out Boylan was beating his wife and decided to take matters into his own hands. The day Spenser is released from prison, Boylan is brutally murdered in an obvious gang hit. A young police officer,Terrance Graham is also found dead in his car outside of his home of an apparent suicide and is blamed for murdering Boylan .
Spenser starts to investigate the murder with his roomate, Hawk (Winston Duke), in order to clear Terrance’s name. What he finds goes much deeper than he expected as he uncovers significant corruption in the police department.
I was excited to see this movie once I knew what it was about and saw that it starred Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke. It looked like it was going to be a very exciting action movie with an interesting story. And for the most part, that’s exactly what this film delivers.
The action scenes were exciting and well shot. There were plenty of fight scenes that kept the movie fast-paced and thrilling. The film was very energetic and kept me on the edge of my seat. There wasn’t much down time in the story, and I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next.
The story was engaging and fun. There were a lot of twists and turns that kept me guessing through most of the movie. In fact, there was so much going on, it was a little hard to keep up with. There were a lot of subplots happening and it made it hard to focus on the main plot. I would have liked to have seen a few less subplots or side characters and more focus on the main story. Other than that, the plot was entertaining and complex.
“Spenser Confidential” is rated R for violence, language throughout, and sexual content. It definitely is not a family movie, but it’s a great film to watch as a couple for a night in, or even by yourself for a little alone time.
“Spenser Confidential” is a fast-paced, exciting action movie with fun action scenes and some great fight sequences. The plot is very in-depth and complex, almost too much so, but it has some great characters and acting. It earns 3.5 out of 5 stars.
