Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse
By James Davidson
“Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” is an action film starring Michael B. Jordan as John Kelly. Kelly is a Navy SEAL who goes on a revenge mission to avenge the murder of his wife. The closer he gets to the killers, the more he realizes there is a larger conspiracy at play. “Without Remorse” was released on April 30th 2021 exclusively on the Netflix streaming service and is based on a Tom Clancy novel of the same name.
I like Tom Clancy novels, and most of the movies based on them. I have read “Without Remorse” and enjoyed it, so I was interested in how the film adaptation would be. As an adaptation of the novel, this movie is unrecognizable, as a stand alone movie, it’s average.
I was disappointed that the movie does not follow the plot of the novel almost at all. I don’t even know why the filmmakers decided to name this movie after the book if they weren’t going to follow the story at all. If you are a Clancy fan, and want to see this movie because you enjoyed the novel, I would have to tell you to pass.
As a stand alone movie, this movie is only ok. The acting isn’t terrible, but it isn’t anything special. The plot is very generic and unoriginal. It is also extremely predictable. I was able to know what was going to happen before it happened, and it obviously had nothing to do with me having read the book.
The one saving grace of this film are the action scenes. The action sequences are extremely exciting and well choreographed and shot. The action scenes almost make up for a disappointing plot and some lackluster writing.
This movie is rated R for violence.Other than a lot of violence and gore, as well as some graphic war scenes, this movie doesn’t have anything else offensive in it. There is not a lot of language or adult themes in it, just a lot of graphic violence. Because of the violence, the film would be innapropriate for younger children, but ok for families with teenagers.
“Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” is related to the novel by name only. It is disappointing if you are a CLancy fan, and only barely passable if you are an action movie fan. It has a predictable plot that follows all of the action movie tropes almost to the letter. It has little to no surprises or plot twists. The only thing this film does have is exciting well filmed action sequences. If you are a fan of the book, I have to tell you to skip this movie, I didn’t even realize that this film was based on the novel I read until after the film was over and I looked it up. If you are an action movie fan, there are better options out there. It earns 2 out of 5 stars.
